Patones de Arriba: the most authentic village near Madrid

Just over an hour north of Madrid, at the foot of the Sierra Norte, Patones de Arriba is for us the most authentic village you can visit from the capital. Its houses, streets and walls are built from dark slate — the style known as "black architecture" — and the village has kept its character almost untouched. No souvenir shops on every corner and no tour buses: just a quiet hillside village where time seems to have stopped.

The legend of the independent kingdom

Local legend says Patones was so well hidden in the mountains that for centuries it governed itself, with its own "kings". Your private guide tells you these stories as you walk through the village, so the history comes to life street by street.

A real village, not a tourist attraction

Unlike the most famous day trips from Madrid, Patones is not a mass-tourism destination. You share its lanes with locals and a few walkers, especially on weekdays. It is the ideal day out if you want to see the real, rural side of Spain.

What the day looks like

• Hotel pickup at 08:00 or 09:00 and a comfortable private drive of around one hour (68 km).
• Guided walk through the slate architecture, the Church of San José and El Lavadero, the old village washhouse.
• The Senda del Barranco trail and viewpoints over the Atazar Reservoir.
• Lunch in the village, some free time, and the drive back to your hotel — about 7 hours in total.

Prices

The tour is 100% private, with hotel pickup, transfers, a private guide and lunch included: €600 for 2 people (€300 per person), €750 for 3, €1,000 for 4 or 5, €1,200 for 6, €1,400 for 7 and €1,600 for 8.

Who this tour is not for

Patones de Arriba is built on a steep hillside, with uneven cobblestones and some sections of trail. This tour is not recommended for people with reduced mobility, wheelchair users or anyone who has difficulty walking on slopes or uneven ground. Comfortable, non-slip shoes are essential.
